OWT ISSUE #10 'DISPLACEMENT' OUT NOW

This is OWT issue #10 'Displacement'. It features interpretations by eighteen different Northwest creatives as well as the members of the OWT team. OWT INTERNSHIP

OWT creative is looking to share some of the lessons learnt from working in self-publishing. Our idea is to bring small groups of students with a publication idea into our studio a day a week for 6 weeks, with the aim of creating a publication which will be released through OWT Press at the end of the process. The subject of the publication is entirely down to the students. OWT will be on hand to help with art direction, as well as dealing with exhibitions, publicity, finding and managing content, printing, print events, stockists and other parts of the industry that can be hard to learn without experienced help.

The experience will be a chance for students to set up as a collective, learning from our mistakes and successes and thus avoiding the pitfalls we fell into during our attempts at creating OWT. The project can go as far as the student want it to. They can create a single publication, establish themselves as a collective, set up a studio or anything in between. The students will own all publications created, receive any money that comes from the project and are free to tell us to fuck off at any point in the process.

We want students to approach us with an idea that we can't say no to.

THE LONELY LIFE OF THE SECRET LUCHADOR

This is the first zine to be released through OWT press, the self-publishing arm of OWT creative. 'The Lonely Life of the Secret Luchador' was a collaborative project between writer Rob Starkey & Jon Hannan. It documents the lives of five individuals who were dealt a tough hand by fate, their only escape from the mundanity is through the glory of their secret lives, as Luchadors.

Each zine has a four colour screen print cover and has numerous hand cut pages. If you would like to purchase a copy you can do so from HERE.

OWT #7 SCIENCE NOW AVAILABLE

Our latest issue Science is now available from our SHOP. This 56 page zine comes with one of three different A3 posters designed by Lord Whitney wrapped around the cover. There are several screen prints and a full cover center spread as well.

You can see select pages from the zine on our Facebook and we shall endevour to have the issue in our Manchester stockists (Magma, Cornerhouse and Goodgrief) by the end of the week.

NOTTINGHAM ZINE FAIR

The Raw print event at Nottinghams Hopkinson Gallery last Saturday was a really great event.

When we first pulled up we were worried that the crowd wouldn't want our wares, wouldn't have heard of OWT and wouldn't be interested in our stories about design in the North West.

How wrong we were. I don't think we've been to an event with there was such a good atmosphere, it was busy for nearly the entire day and although things started slow for us it soon picked up. People even put up with me prattling on about OWT for far longer than they had to, sorry to anyone who had to put up with me going on about screen printing and where the name OWT comes from for ages.

OWT INTERVIEWS: KENNETH MOORE

1. First off, could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m 22 years of age and I grew up down South by the sea in Brighton. I’m now about to graduate from Design & Art Direction at Manchester School Of Art just like the OWT kids did last year!

Ideally strong creative communication is my goal and the phrase Design & Thought Direction sums up my approach. I focus on first cracking a brief and finding what it needs then rolling out the solution coherently across whatever platforms necessary while welcoming collaboration.

I get a buzz of having an idea or cracking a brief (basically problem solving) then bringing it from nothing to something tangible that others can experience through whatever output necessary.

Design is a great catalyst in this way and theoretically never gets boring because as a designer or creative you act as a crucible to communicate something. This means you're not working with just one subject and you're constantly learning about new things be it sea life, hospitals, restaurants, philosophy or whatever the brief demands. It is this fundamental variation in being a designer that I love.

2. You're involved in London based publication Fragment, what attracts you to contributing and taking part in publications like OWT and Fragment?

My friend James Kirkup from Brighton started up Fragment in London and asked me to contribute, it began as a blog and will soon be on its second newspaper print run. It’s a nice project and very well art directed by James. At the beginning I wanted to be a lot more involved but being in Manchester and studying full time has made it difficult so currently I just contribute to the blog and newspaper features. It’s been a good learning curve as regards to spreading time around different projects.

3. How does work that you produce for OWT compare to work that you make at degree level? Do the two feed into each other or do you keep them separate?

It’s really nice doing work for OWT because the themes you set for each zine are simple and very open yet still tie together a broad range of individual's work nicely. It's different from my degree level work as I usually do briefs with problems that need solving where as for OWT it's more of a personal reaction to a proposition from you guys, it's cool to have the option to do this and design something nice that doesn’t necessarily have to communicate an answer to a brief.

4. I've noticed that you and a lot of our other contributors now follow each other and interact quite a bit on twitter, is there anyone in particular whose work you really like? Any people you would like to work / collaborate with?

Oh the wonders of social media. There is definitely some kind of network going on there. It's nice to get an instant response to work you have done. However with any social environment on the internet, these comments and dialogs are usually quite fleeting and quickly disappear of screen with a scroll of a bar, leaving any possible tangible outcome from a conversation or comment a lot more likely to escape before anything has been acted upon. Unlike a face to face impassioned conversation, which I think will always carry more weight no matter how far the possibilities of interaction online take us.

5. Could you tell us a bit more about your work that has been featured in the zines?

Sure, the first submission was for the 'Reflections' zine. Using a grid system each shape betrays its location to create the face of a lion, the king of nature from whom we can learn a lot as humans. The lion is a true king of its habitat but also lives in harmony with it. Unlike us. The reflection of the non flinching lions face suggests that we should reflect and consider our place on this Earth as humans who see ourselves as kings of nature.

Another entry was for your 'Direction' zine at the beginning of 2011. The beginning of the year is often when you feel most inspired, afflicted or a mix of the two towards your own direction in your own life. I focused on this very moment just after New Years 2010 when my clock showed the date and time with as many number ones as possible. I used it as inspiration to capture thoughts and ideas inspired from philosophers such as Alan Watts on Hinduism in a piece of writing based upon the idea of the singular one; what it means and how it defines our direction as a singular entity in the universe.

6. What's next for you?

I have recently been accepted on the new Hyper Island course starting in Manchester this May. It’s the first course they have opened outside of their legendary school in Sweden. Conveniently enough it starts on the day of my final hand in for D&AD at Manchester School Of Art. So much for a chilled summer after three years studying then.

However, I am super excited to be accepted on Hyper Island and I’m sure lots of hard work as well as summer fun will be had at and around their new studio space in the Watts Bros building on Lever Street, Northern Quarter. If there is a studio warming (if they exist) I will make sure OWT can be attendance! Keep an eye out for Hyper Island projects around Manchester in the coming months.

OWT INTERVIEWS: THOM ISOM

When we started OWT creative we were keen to get as much exposure for our contributors as possible. So, after much delay here is the first in a series of interviews. We start with OWT favourite, Thom Isom.

Ben: Hello Thom, tell us a bit about yourself.

Thom: I graduated from De Montfort University, Leicester in 2010 with a degree in Graphic Design. Originally from Chorley, Lancashire I moved to Liverpool soon after graduating. I've spent the past 8 months working freelance, building my portfolio, making contacts and generally pondering around the streets of Merseyside. I hope to spend the next couple of years soaking up as much experience as I can; working placements, internships and freelance whilst networking with as many designers and artists as humanly possible along the way. Until then I pass the time eating porridge, listening to an unhealthy amount of post-rock music and reading WW2 books.

You were our first customer at our first zine fair, it was quite a big deal for us to see that people actually wanted to buy our work and believed in what we wanted to do with the zine. What were your first impressions ofOWT?

As far as first impressions go you guys win points for organization and presentation, you all worked liked a well-oiled machine at that zine fair. I think I remember Jon stood at the back tidying stock and putting up posters and the rest of the crew all donned in OWT tees ready to grab the attention of any passers-by. In all honestly you looked like you’d be doing it for years – Tidy stuff as well, I’m a sucker for a clean white table cloth and perfectly aligned zines and posters.

What made you want to contribute your own work?

It was a no-brainer to be honest, fresh out of university and eager to get involved wherever I could I jumped at the opportunity! Studying down in Leicester and coming back home to the northwest I felt a little out of touch with what was going on design wise - OWT made for a good transition to get back into the scene and just be involved with other up and coming designers / artists.

We've had the pleasure of bumping into you at a few different events now and each time we meet you seem to have managed something pretty special, getting features in books and websites, new jobs, more freelance work than you can shake a stick at etc. What's the attraction to keep giving up your time to create stuff for OWT?

For me the main reason is a chance to take a break from all my other work, it’s nice to take a step back from everyday design and mess around with ideas/concepts I might not usually get the chance to work with. And well, not just that but most of those opportunities above have come from being involved in projects just like OWT. I think it’s important for designers and artists alike to get stuck in and out of their comfort zone, even if it means battling against pressing deadlines. The opportunities that come from collaboration and open submissions are vital for up and coming designers. Word of mouth is a powerful thing and I think OWT is doing a good job of showing its value.

I've noticed that you and a lot of our other contributors now follow each other and interact quite a bit on twitter, anyone in particular who's work you really like? Any people you would like to work / collaborate with?

If that’s what you guys planned out to do you’ve succeeded all round! Like I mentioned previously I moved back to the north after studying at DMU and felt out of touch as soon as I got here – It’s all well and good networking and making connections whilst at University, but it’s pretty pointless when you decide to move 100+ miles away afterward.. OWT and other similar projects have helped me find my place in the northwest in terms of design again.

All round I think those who have been involved with OWT have been awesome – nice to see such varied work in each and every issue. In particular though I’ve enjoyed the pieces from Kat Currie, Matt Keers, Katherine Beefheart & Igor Termenon – Those guys have got some skills and would love to see where some collaboration could lead!

Your spread in 'Reality' was really well received in the zine and at the exhibition, could you tell us more about it?

Well, the idea came from a quote from David Hume – a Scottish philosopher & historian. Background research isn’t something I normally take too seriously but with the reality piece I quite enjoyed the process – almost as much as making of the piece itself.

The photographs were taken from a climbing trip in the Alps a few years ago… I came back from that trip with hundreds of photos, until then I hadn’t really found a suitable use for them! It fell together quite nicely in the end when I decided to go back to a technique I was messing around with at University – Curve-stitch – the craft in a design is the most important thing for me. After submitting the piece to you guys at OWT I decided to extend the series into a collection stitched & screen-printed posters. Check them out here.

What's next for you?

Well, I’m currently working full time for Merseyside council in their design department – Trying to pick up a bit more commercial experience and dig myself out of this bottomless overdraft (one day..!) – I’ve got a couple of exhibitions I’m involved with coming up in the summer and looking ahead for any designers / artists who want to get involved in new ideas (give me a shout if you’re interested) Other than that just enjoying Liverpool and seeking out new work, placements and internships every day!

Issue 5: Atmoshere has been sent to print and a whole bunch of lovely people have been featured inside the soon to be printed covers.

For the first time us lot at OWTcreative have held back to only one spread each, giving plenty of room for some brilliant work. Not going to give too much away just yet but you can see the full list of contributors here. The lovely guys at Its Zeene have produced another one of their zines, each issue they pick a word and for issue four it's Dogs.

At only £1.50 it's a steal, our issue is on its way and a better review will arrive when it does.

OWT CREATIVE AT CORD 10.02.11

A big thank you to everyone who came down last Thursday (10th) for the opening of our two week exhibition at Cord Bar. We had worked solidly for four or five days leading up to the night itself so it was good to see all the hard work pay off with a great turn out. It's been a couple of busy months for OWT, but we're pleased to finally announce that issue #4 Direction is now on sale. It features the work of the five OWT members as well as twelve other North West creatives and their interpretation of the word 'Direction'. A lot of effort went into this issue with us clocking up over 900 individual screen-prints putting together the one hundred and twenty five issues and we're really proud of it. Last night was OWT creatives first exhibition and we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came down to Cord Bar and took part. Was great to meet some of our contributors for the first time and see some old faces as well.

So here comes the big list of personal thank yous. Sorry to go all Oscars acceptance speech on you....

First of all the owners and staff of Cord Bar, thanks for the incredible space, the free booze, putting up with us throughout the week and all the help on the night.

Alongside the exhibition we would like to invite people who attend the opening evening to bring a small piece on the theme of 'Exchange' that will become part of the exhibition. The piece must be small enough to be clipped into the frame of a projector. It can be a clipping of a magazine, a piece of coloured film, a photo or anything else as long as it's flat. This is by no means compulsory, but if you bring us something you may receive a small something in exchange.

Just stumbled across this video from Andrew Wonder showing urban historian Steve Duncan and himself exploring the old underground and bridge systems of New York. It's a bit long perhaps for a quick browse but definitely worth watching if you're at all interested in how the city has grown.

Issue 4:Direction is off to the printers today, I'm sure MARCS Nothern Quarter are overjoyed to see our smiling faces coming through the door with another massive job.

I'll take this as a chance to apologise to MARCS for our demands of stock and page numbers which lead to bent staples and late evenings for them. We do appreciate the effort guys! If you're from Manchester and need a printers then definitely head over to the Northern Quarter and you'll find MARCS nestled opposite Common Bar.

INSIDE THE TUNISIAN REVOLT

Getting to hear the viewpoint of a foreigner stuck inside a country going through a particularly violent revolution isn't something that happens everyday.

Tunisia is currently revolting after a young man was shot dead for protesting against the government, it seems that the people were so oppressed that it was the final straw and mass protests started, leading to police brutality to an extreme that makes the recent London Student protest 'kettling' look like a fun afternoon.

Methalif is written from an insiders viewpoint and it's a great read. An insight and writing style completely different to that from the proper journalists who are reporting on the revolt.

I know this isn't graphic design news, but it's a pretty incredible thing that is happening and an interesting read for sure.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

First of all we at OWT hope everyone has had a great Christmas and a chance to unwind after what was (for myself at least) a very full on year. I'll also use this post to get my Happy New Year wishes in a bit early, may 2011 be a success.

Unfortunately we can't sit in front of the TV watching re runs and eating quality street all day as deadline for OWT 4 is rapidly approaching, on that note a massive thank you to everyone who has contributed to, distributed, stocked, recommended and purchased OWT so far, we're a quarter of the way through our project and can't believe how well it's gone so far.

Fingers crossed, before long we'll have our first exhibition/event, issue 4 will be on shelves by the end of Jan and we can carry on the momentum from this year into the next.

EYE WRITER

I heard about this a while back and then stumbled upon a video for it today. The idea is a drawing software that can be operated by eye movements alone, meaning people struck by paralysis can still be creative. The book (and subsequent film) of The Diving Bell And The Butterfly(le scaphandre et le papillon) were bought to mind, where the lead character Jean-do suffers from locked in syndrome and communicates through eye movement yet still has an incredible imagination. In the film below Tony, a sufferer of Lou Gehrig's syndrome, is able to continue his graffiti writing with the help of the Eye Writer idea. Amazing to see what some creative thinking, initiative and know how can do.

CENTRAL STATION BOOK RELEASE

Central Station are releasing a coffee table book this coming January and from the sounds of it, and the standard of the work they feature on their website it's going to be brilliant. Central Station are only 18 months old but have already done a tonne to help promote the arts community and deserve a pat on the back for all their hard work.

The book will feature images and text from their work showcasing new artists, collaborations, their funded projects and so on. Look at their website for more details.

BACK FROM T'POOL

We were in Liverpool last Thursday doing all kinds of things in an effort to win the respect of our peers and fellow designers at the Shellsuit Zombie organised Industry vs Graduates.

The turn out was fairly poor, with a large selection of the crowd (crowd perhaps an overstatement?) being from MMU, it wasn't exactly the chance to meet new people we were hoping for but it was a top night out none the less. I drew a Nazi centaur in the 'draw a bad guy competition' and Ste put pegs on someones face in the 'put pegs on someones face' competition. By the time it was ready for the last train (which turned out to be a bus) home we had drank a fair amount, had a bit of a dance, decided that we were the rightful winner of the event and had a scare at the hands of the transport police causing Kats secret cider stash to be vigorously spilled all over myself.

LIVERPOOL BOUND

OWT creative are off en masse to Liverpool tonight to take part in the Industry vs Graduates event organised by shell suit zombie. No idea what is expected of us, how the night will pan out or whether tomorrow morning shall find the five of us with raging hangovers or well rested and working away on OWT issue 3. Speaking of Issue 3, we should be figuring out the page order, who's in and who isn't, what the cover colours and stock will be etc on Saturday. Always a fun, yet difficult day.

There is a lot of talk in The States, and California in particular, at the moment about proposition 19 (the legalisation and taxation of Marijuana) and I came across this brilliant animation by I Shot Him on Fecal Face arts blog about the issue.

A really nice mix of illustration and info graphics, regardless of whether you're bothered by the issue or not it's an interesting animation executed very well.

ISSUE TWO

Wednesday saw a whole load of travel back and forth between town, university, printers and back to university again as myself and Jon struggled with getting one hundred covers printed for OWT issue 2.

Three colour choices (orange, aquamarine and a very fetching magenta) on 200 gsm paper certainly looked nice on the drying rack.

We shall be getting the trimmed and covered zines back on Tuesday, ready for another fun filled day of screening inside spreads and numbering each issue.

Amazing design work by Jacob Escobedo of Hunted Down for Broken Bells, which is the new collaboration between The Shins frontman and Danger Mouse. Escobedo is also responsible for the 'Dark Night of the Soul' artwork which is another great musical collaboration between the director David Lynch, Sparklehorse and Dangermouse. Everyone knows I love a bit of symmetry and shape.

THE FUTURE OF MUSIC VIDEOS?

360 degree music videos....Could they be the future for the music video industry? A friend of mine sent me this link and despite not being a fan of the track I have to admit I think this is a pretty good video (or at least an interesting angle to take and ameliorate a poor video with). I don't think I would have bothered listening to the end of the track without the gimmick. I'd like to see some more examples of this with more thinking behind what the viewer sees when the angle is rotated. Not bad for a first attempt though.

PICADILLY SELF PUBLISHING FAIR

We have had a busy week this past week getting ready for the launch of our very first zine at the Piccadilly Self Publishing Fair in Manchester on 3rd Oct. Thankfully all the hours we spent screen printing and adjusting spreads payed off, not forgetting my mums contribution of numbering every zine on the back. The zines were really well received by people and we got some lovely feedback. Quite a few zines were sold and even a couple of prints. We got soaked in the rain, froze half to death, chatted with old friends and made some brand new ones. All in all we had a really great day, just can't wait to get cracking on the next issue now.

THE WRITING'S ON THE WALL

So Issue 1 of OWT zine is almost ready to be sent off to the press, exciting times for sure. I couldn't attend tonight's meeting of minds to discuss the finer points of page numbering, thumbnails and front covers but seeing a selection spreads go up on the walls of Jon's flat over the last few days has been pretty exciting.

Order has been changed, re arranged, scrapped and re written more than a few times, pages have been added and taken away but it seems that things are getting to the point where we can send a weighty file over to a printers soon.

The image below is from about a week ago when we first started a mock up of the pagination. Can't wait to get a stack of zines delivered. Exciting times for sure.

A FEW THINGS...

I managed to see one of my favourite electronic artists this weekend at Bestival on the Isle of Wight. Fever Ray debut album quickly became recognised as one of the best albums of 2009, taking influences from experimental techno, dub and goth to form a haunting and sometimes unsettling result. Her dramatic performance and costumes add to the thrill of the experience, so I thought I would share the video to 'When I Grow Up.'

Another relic taken from my personal blog. I love this video of NYC using Tilt Shift lenses to create a miniature looking city scape. I'm a big fan of the effect, I think it was originally designed to be used for architectural applications but it has seen a recent boom in usage, gigs, sports matches, monster truck shows etc have all been shot using tilt shift and can be found easily but none of them are as interesting as this one in my opinion. Enjoy.

Fiona Banner: Decommissioned fighter planes, the Harrier Hawk and the Jaguar.
Standing next to the suspended Harrier Hawk was intimidating to say the least. Im not sure I had the reaction that Banner might have been intending to get across to her audience, instead I had a constant (all be it irrational) fear that the thing was about to come down on top of me at any moment. It was still impressive though. The Jaguar was fairly tame compared to its brother and didnt really have any effect on me.

For the benefit of you, the reader, and us, the writers, OWT creative has changed it's blog format from the previous version that was inclusive to the website, to this separate blogger version. Sure it may involve a few more clicks and a few more seconds in load time getting here, but now you can leave comments, follow our blog, re-tweet anything insightful or comedic that we churn out and a whole bunch of other stuff. Being on blogger also means that anyone from OWT can upload to the blog at anytime without any faffing in Dreamweaver, so expect more updates. This is just the beginning of OWT creative, there were always going to be teething problems, bare with us, it will only get better from here.

A MEETING OF MINDS

On Monday the whole OWT creative team managed to organise itself to be roughly in the same place at the same time. With so many ideas of projects going around it's been pretty difficult to narrow our focus down to something realistically achievable. However, we sat down, ate some rocky road, drank some tea and got the pencils out and after a few hours it looks like we're getting somewhere.

OWT now has a calendar full of dates and deadlines to work towards, shouldn't be too long before we can start to reveal exactly what our plans are, in the meantime enjoy a selection of photos that are a combination of too blurred, too dark and just plain awful. Please note that my photography isn't always this bad and we weren't sitting in the dark it's just my point and shoot is on its very last legs and struggling to stay on let alone take pictures. Despite the terrible quality of said photos there are still plenty of clues in there for what we'll be releasing to you all soon.

Owt is steadily growing, plans are being hatched, designs made and impromptu meetings being held. Despite our lack of content so far don't be thinking this is a flash in the pan idea, we really believe in the plans we have made so far and can't wait to share some more of them with you all soon. T-shirts and prints are being finalised, magazines soon after that, then the world. For the time being here's a stencil I knocked up as a cheeky little experiment. Bigger, more exciting things to come.
